Merry 1940s Christmas - this weekend!

UPTON House continues its fantastically festive Christmas on the 1940s Home Front withThe Victory Christmas Fayre this weekend (3rd and 4th December).

Opening at 11am each day, there will be over 30 stalls selling local handicrafts and produce - including jewellery, leather bags and glass products. Artisan producers will be selling local bread, cheese, ale and other goods perfect for Christmas, There is also a food tent provinding everything from pulled pork to mulled wine.

The house in Oxhill will be decorated throughout with foliage from their own gardens, real vintage decorations, and decorations created to vintage patterns. Visitors over the Christmas period will be able to find out all about how people celebrated Christmas at a time of rationing. When each person only has access to such a small number of provisions each week, it would have been hard to create a Christmas feast which would rival anything we do today. Imagine your festive baking with only one egg per person per week!

You will also be able to see how people decorated their homes and created gifts for each other during the festive season, in real ‘make do and mend’ style. Also on display will be some of the knitted bunting that formed the recent world record-breaking effort of 7.5km, as declared by Mary Berry in last week’s Herald.
