SIXTEEN years ago the residents of Stratford and the surrounding towns and villages came together as a community and raised the funds to open The Shakespeare Hospice. Now it is a nationally recognised, award-winning, charity which provides a vital and unique service to Stratford and the wider community.

On Friday, 24th June the hospice is asking people to Shake it Purple for The Shakespeare Hospice and help raise funds for the nursing staff and services the hospice provides.

Encouraging everyone to get involved, Vikki Calcutt, head of income generation added: “Fundraising doesn’t have to be boring! “The success of campaigns such as Red Nose Day and Children in Need, show us that we can have all kinds of fun raising money and it would be lovely if people could show their support in an enjoyable way, for a charity that is close to the hearts of the local community.”

To get started and support the hospice people need to register for a free fundraising pack which includes a bucket and a tin or money box to collect donations.

“Whether it be in the office, at school or at home, everyone can do their bit for The Shakespeare Hospice. There are many easy ways to get involved. Why not hold a ‘Bake it Purple’ day at school or your local community centre, encourage your colleagues to show their support by wearing ‘A Piece of Purple’ to work or host a Purple Bingo evening with your friends?” said Vikki.

The Shakespeare Hospice receives only around 7 per cent funding from the Government, making it the lowest funded hospice in the whole of the UK.

Kate Hall, head of clinical services, said: “The hospice is a fantastic cause and relies almost solely on donations to keep delivering vital care to the local community. Without this support, we wouldn’t be able to provide expert and specialist care to those living with a life-limiting illness, whether it be here at the hospice, or in the comfort of their own home.”

The Shake it Purple campaign was launched on Thursday and runs up to the big fundraising day on the 24th June where the hospice will be holding an outdoor event in Kenilworth.
