Housing proposal at former Broom Station submitted

Plans for a new dwelling on the site of Broom’s long abandoned railway station have been submitted to Stratford District Council.

The application, submitted by Mark Harding, seeks permission for a two bedroom single story property to sit on the platform area, designed to look like the station buildings that previously stood there.

The site has not been used as a railway station since the 1960s, but was used as a highways depot by the council for a time following its closure.

The platform and line of the railway remain in place and the remains of some platform buildings still exist, however the planning application says that in general the area has fallen into a poor state, has been a victim of vandalism and is an unattractive feature on the landscape.

It is located on greenbelt land, but the applicant argues the proposal is appropriate as the land has previously been developed and is a sustainable development within walking distance of Broom.

The application concludes: “The building is single storey. It will be located in the same part of the site as the former station building. The new building will therefore have no greater impact on the openness of the green belt than the former station or its subsequent use as a highways depot.”

A decision on the application is currently scheduled to be made towards the end of April.
