Historic boathouse shorlisted for award
THE restoration of the historic boathouse at Warwick Castle has been nominated for an architectural award.
The 5th Earl of Warwick, Frances Greville, ordered the building of a boathouse on the east bank of the river in 1896 to house an electric motor boat which was powered by electricity generated by the castle’s mill.
It was completely rebuilt last year after being destroyed by fire in 2015, which was led by Leamington-based historic building consultants, Rodney Melville and Partners.
And now it is one of three finalists in the Building Conservation category of the 2018 West Midlands Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
The is up against the visitor centre, biomass plant, and stables cafe renovations at Attingham Park in Shopshire and Weavers’ Cottages in Kidderminster.
There are eight categories in all with the winners of each announced in Wolverhampton in May and then going on to the national final in November.
