Christmas dinner is served in Henley thanks to regulars at the Three Tuns

STEVE Aston admits he’s not very good at darts but knows he’s much better at golf which is why a challenge made during a darts match darts raised £1,100 and paid for Henley’s Community Christmas Day Lunch that fed 80 people.

“I’m useless at darts and the lads who play on a Sunday night remind me about that quite often,” said Steve. “But I hit the bulls eye when I laid down a challenge to the lads and said they could play me at golf anytime they wanted and I would beat them every time,” Steve said.

The challenge was accepted and Steve told each player they could have two shots per hole while he played off scratch.

Little did the happy bunch of 30 golfers know when they first started the Three Tuns Golf Society two years ago – where they drink and play darts in Henley - that they would one day raise £1,100 for Henley’s Christmas lunch 2023 but now it appears there’s enough money left over to help pay this year’s Christmas lunch.

“We meet once a month at Ardencote Golf and pay £5 each. It’s a lot of fun and we get trophies after each get together – there’s even one for the person who finishes last. We’ve raised £680 and this gets added to by other friends and businesses in the community. It meant that eighty people enjoyed a traditional lunch on Christmas Day – forty were sat down and forty were home deliveries,” Steve said.

There’s no news on Steve’s darts progress to report but his mates are getting into the swing of things and the ultimate winner is charity which begins at home especially in the community of Henley.
