Gear up for Wings and Wheels

THE roar of aircraft engines and the smell of jet fuel are set to fill the air at the closure-threatened Wellesbourne Airfield this Sunday, 19th June, as it hosts its annual Wings and Wheels event.

Last year Wings and Wheels attracted around 6,000 visitors, many eager to see the last flying Vulcan bomber make its final flight over the airfield.

Whilst that famous aircraft has now retired from flying, visitors this Sunday will be able to see Wellesbourne’s XM655 Vulcan take two high speed taxi runs down the runway, the next best thing to seeing a Vulcan in flight.

Aside from the Vulcan a number of other aircraft including jet trainers the de Havilland Vampire and the Jet Provost will fly in and there will be a display of more than 200 classic cars, motorbikes and rescue vehicles.

Charles Brimson, chairman of the MX655 Vulcan Maintenance and Preservation Society, said: “I think what draws people to the Vulcan is the spectacle of seeing a large aircraft going from 0- 100mph and back and experiencing the sensation of four Olympus engines running at full power.

"Wings and Wheels is the highlight of my year, it’s the perfect day out for Father’s Day.”

Entry to Wings and Wheels costs £5 per adult and the event runs from 10am-4pm.
