Tread the Boards group in Stratford left reeling after floods last month

A THEATRE company has spoken of its ‘disappointment’ at having to cancel five shows and close its doors until June.

Tread the Boards (TTB) in Cox’s Yard was left reeling after the area was flooded last month.

The Grade-II listed warehouse where the company rehearses and performs needs refurbishing, as does the pub, café and Airbnb on the same site.

Brewery and pub company Wells & Co, which leases the buildings from Stratford District Council, announced the pub, café and accommodation would have to close ‘to ensure safety’ while contractors were brought in to repair damage from the flood and rebuild where needed.

The basement and kitchen of Cox’s Yard pub were badly flooded, causing sewage to come up through the drains.

Clean-up crews arrived on site quickly and contractors started repair and rebuilding work a week ago [1st February] but this is expected to take up to five months.

Tread the Boards artistic director John-Robert Partridge told the Herald: “We’ve had to cancel five shows between now and June which is very disappointing.

“They were already cast so we had to tell all the actors and they have been very understanding.

“We’ve also had to return several thousands of pounds in refunds to audiences who’d bought tickets.”

He added: “Wells & Co have told us we don’t have to pay any rent until we have audiences back in the building again.

“There’s a lot of work needed on site to repair all the flood damage as the basement and the kitchen of the pub were wrecked and lots of other things need to be replaced.

“The warehouse building is Grade-II listed, which makes it more complicated to replace the wood and so on and the whole site needed to be closed for safety reasons but we’re hopeful they’ll meet the June target for re-opening.”

Wells & Co has said when the pub re-opens it will include a taproom serving craft beers made by its Bedfordshire brewery Brewpoint.

The only other thing I have is from their press release:

Mike Laudat, senior operations manager at Wells & Co, said: “We are looking forward to re-opening Cox’s Yard as a taproom this coming summer.

“With a busy plan of refurbishments and improvements underway, it won’t be long until we are welcoming back the pub’s locals alongside new customers.”
