First look: The Other Place
On 8 March the Herald’s Mark Williamson was among the first photographers allowed into the new RSC theatre, The Other Place.
RSC Deputy Artistic Director - Erica Whyman - showed regional press around the iconic studio theatre which has been rebuild at a cost of £7.8million.
Originally built in 1973, The Other Place was home to the RSC’s developmental and new work, housing many landmark productions with RSC alumni such as Judi Dench, Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren.
The theatre closed in 2006 to make way for the temporary Courtyard Theatre, where the RSC performed during the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Although the outside of the building looks unchanged, inside the transformation is incredible. The interior is Tardis-like and contains two huge hangar-like rehearsal rooms, a 200-seat studio theatre and ‘Costume Store’.
The first production in the theatre takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, 9 March) when Edward’s Boys, the drama group from Stratford’s King Edward IV School, put on a production of The Woman Hater. The Jacobean comedy was written by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher in 1607.
