FAIRY tales came to life on Saturday (7th September) when a village welcomed a host of new residents.
The new event, Scarecrows in Lapworth, saw some 50 entries revive a tradition that used to be a big part of the community but ended several years ago.
“Some were hilarious, some were scary and they were all exceptional,” said Derek Abbott, who headed up the committee that launched this new era with the theme of The Land of Fairy Tales.
“I thought as long as we got 20 it would work - 40 I would be in dreamland. On the morning, we had 42 registered and then more joined in.
“It went really well and all the proceeds are being shared between Lapworth School, Lapworth Players, the WI and the village hall.”
There was a prize for the scariest, the funniest and then a top prize.
That went to Peter Rabbit, with Mr Abbott adding: “It was in one of the front gardens, with cabbages and the the children loved it.”
Money was raised by selling walking maps - that had to be reprinted due to demand - and from the WI refreshments, the bar and the raffle.
A final total is yet to be worked out but Mr Abbott is looking at a repeat performance: “I think we could look at doing it every other year.”
