Experts take oral health message into schools
During their visits to schools, the two pharmacists have been speaking to pupils about the importance of brushing for two minutes twice a day - one being last things at night, as well as limiting between-meal snacking and sugary drinks to reduce the amount of time teeth are exposed to acid.
They also warned about hidden sugars in processed foods like white bread and raisins, and added that regular visits to the dentist should start as soon as a child’s first milk tooth comes through.
Mr Rogers told the Herald: “The kids were really engaged in it and asked lots of questions. The overall basic awareness is there with the youngsters but the message we were giving is that you only have one set of milk teeth, so it’s important to look after them properly, as they set a pattern for the permanent ones too.”
Across the UK, thousands of children are having large numbers of their milk teeth removed in hospital at a very early age, due to tooth decay.
It has been reported in the national press that the problem is worst in Scotland, with north-west England and Wales also being badly affected. Dentists have indicated that poor diet and sugary drinks in feeding bottles are to blame.
Any schools interested in the pharmacists visiting to hand out packs to pupils, have been asked to contact Mick Rogers on 01789 273847. Additionally, parents who would like a teeth brushing reward chart can pick one up from Tesco Pharmacy, in the Stratford store, on Birmingham Road.
