End of the line for Stratford's phone boxes?
Proposals to remove up to 74 public telephone boxes across the Stratford district have been revealed by BT.
The telecoms giant has already started a consultation on the proposals through Stratford District Council, which is talking to residents and parish councils.
Residents are being asked to either agree to the removals, to object or to adopt a callbox for use by the local community.
Depending on the results of the consultation, which ends on Thursday 8th December, Stratford District Council will then decide which phone boxes it will give BT permission to close.
BT say overall use of payphones has declined by more than 90% in the past decade and the need to provide them for emergency situations is diminishing as 98% of the UK has either 3G or 4G coverage.
