Easter egg donations from Stratford-upon-Avon residents reach children in Ukraine

CHILDREN in Ukraine have received the first batch of Easter eggs bought by kind-hearted Stratford residents.

Local charity Aid for Ukraine, which operates out of Stratford and Leamington, asked people to buy a chocolate egg.

Stratford’s drop-off point is the Fishing and Outdoors shop on Timothy’s Bridge Road run by Martyn Edwards.

Mr Edwards said there has been a “huge response” to the appeal, reported in the Herald, with hundreds of Easter eggs donated.

He has also received a “very generous” donation of new soft toys from a local company, plus medical supplies.

Mr Edwards has reeled-in hundreds of pounds from customers and angling clubs to help Ukrainians suffering under the Russian invasion, since the war started in February last year.

The charity has strong links to nuns in Ukraine. The Sisters from the Congregation of St Joseph have thrown open their doors to hundreds of people seeking shelter.

The charity has helped raise money to pay for hundreds of Ukrainian children to go on summer camps and raised the cash to pay for a 14-year-old boy to have eye surgery after he was diagnosed with a condition that would have caused him to go blind.

The volunteers have also bought and delivered ambulances to the war-torn country, and electric generators which are vital when power lines are down.

The chocolate eggs are first driven to a warehouse in Poland before being taken on to the nuns in Ukraine who are making sure they reach the children in time for Easter.

The county-wide egg collection is also backed by The Polish Centre, LKQ Euro Car Parts, Warwickshire County Council, Warwickshire Gin Company, Windmill Hill Brewing Company, the Rotary Club and Boden.

There’s still time to donate an Easter egg, as the deadline is this Friday, 31st March 2023.
