Dragons and nature inspire children at workshop

CHILDREN in Tysoe have been inspired to love and understand nature with a summer workshop held recently.

This year 30 children attended the five-day Tysoe Wildlife and Drama Workshop and worked together to produce a play called Precious Things which featured a dragon and was performed after only five morning sessions.

On the first day, which was Dragon Day, the youngsters found out their dragon names, read through the play and made dragon pictures while trying to decide how to classify a dragon – was it a reptile or a bird?

The next day was Oceans Day and included a visit from scuba diver, Nigel Maris. The children tried on some diving kit and also made jellyfish, crabs, tropical fish and learnt about the environmental danger plastics cause to oceans and wildlife.

Birds Fir Tree Falconry paid a flying visit on the third day and the children met two owls and a red footed falcon and got to hold them.

By the fourth day it was all about preparing for the play which included making props, a group cityscape art project and rehearsals.

On day five, children found out about recycling, making skittles out of plastic bottles for a skittles tournament and a final dress rehearsal before performing the play.

Organisers said they were grateful for the efforts of all the volunteers, the use of St Mary’s Church to stage the workshop and to the Cotswold National Landscape for additional funding and donations that came from the community.
