Creative pensioners build surgery mosaic
A group of creative pensioners have created a mosaic sign at a local medical centre as part of a program to combat loneliness among the elderly.
The mosaic was created as part of the Prime GP’s 75+ initiative, a group whose members range from age 75-85.
Through the initiative, patients are provided with an opportunity to take part in social events and activities based on their shared interests, with sessions proven to improve participants’ mental wellbeing and physical health.
The group created the mosaic during sessions at the surgery every Friday afternoon and it now forms a focal point in the centre’s waiting area.
The group have decided to dedicate the piece to their teacher Con Twomey.
A group spokesperson said: “Being a part of this group has been such a pleasure and we have found great comfort and support from each other, plus we have made many new friends and have learnt a valuable skill along the way too. We are absolutely delighted with the final piece, which forms a wonderful welcome to the Centre’s waiting area, and we’re sure it will be enjoyed by patients and visitors alike for many months and years to come.
Amanda Cogley, Prime75+ Project Manager, added: “Feedback from the patient group involved in this project has been hugely positive, with all involved having benefitted from increased confidence, enhanced socialisation, and the forging of new friendships. The project’s unveiling was the real cherry on the top for the group who should feel immense feelings of pride for what they have achieved over the past few months.”
