County Council launches campaign to reach older drivers in Warwickshire.

HELP is at hand for older drivers. Sadly, over the last three years there were 1508 personal injury casualties over the age of 60, which represents 18 per cent of all casualties on Warwickshire’s roads. However, in terms of casualties sustaining serious injury or being killed, just under a quarter of road casualties (1 in 5) were aged 60 plus.

The campaign is underpinned by Drive On magazine - a free guide for drivers over 65. It has been distributed throughout libraries and doctors surgeries to ensure older people are aware of the risks and have access to key advice and information.

The magazine is designed to offer a wide range of advice to the 65+ age group, not just road safety but also areas addressing efficient driving, the law and mobility.

Cllr John Horner, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety said: “Some senior drivers are among the best on the road in the UK, however even with decades of experience behind them, slower reactions and health problems, such as poor eyesight, can make today’s roads more intimidating and challenging for them.”

Cllr Philip Johnson, Warwickshire County Council’s Chair of the Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee, added: “Our Road Safety Team is working to make our roads safer. We urge Warwickshire’s older drivers to read the latest advice and guidance by picking up the free Drive On magazine at their local library or doctors surgery. ”

Anyone who is concerned about their own driving or someone they know, can request one of our magazines by emailing roadsafety@warwickshire.gov.uk or by calling 01926 418612.
