Councillors to discuss Brexit motion
Calls for the district council to support a ‘people’s vote’ on the final Brexit deal are set to grow louder next week, with a cross-party group of councillors set to raise the issue.
Cllr Peter Moorse (Lib Dem), Cllr Jason Fojtik (Lab) and Cllr Chris Mills (Cons) all support the motion, set to be discussed at Monday’s full council meeting.
It calls on the council to urge the Government to abandon any plans for a hard Brexit and to give the British people a vote on whatever deal they finally get.
The motion says that an option on remaining in the EU should be included in the vote and that the authority should write to MPs Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Wright, and the Brexit Secretary asking them to support a People’s Vote.
Last month pre-Europe Stratford group, Stratford4Europe, launched an online petition on the district council website also urging the council to support a ‘people’s vote’.
More than 300 people have since signed the petition.
