Council tax cold call scam in Stratford
A council spokesperson explained how the scam works: “A bogus female caller who claims to represent Stratford-on-Avon District Council's Council Tax Department tells the resident that they could be owed a potential refund of thousands of pounds following a change in council tax banding. The woman then requests bank details upfront in order to facilitate the refund as well as a £65 payment for admin costs. When this request was refused and the resident asked for the number to call the company back on, to verify that they were genuine, the caller hung up. This was not a legitimate call and we would not request payment in this manner from residents. If you are in any doubt, please verify with the council using the council tax helpline on 01789 260990.”
Householders are advised to contact the police if they receive calls of this nature or call the council tax helpline and to never give personal bank details over the phone if the call cannot be verified.
