Community work wins open spaces award
ALCESTER Town Council has won the Town and Parish Council Partner of the Year category at the national Fields in TrustAwards 2017.
Fields in Trust awards celebrate the UK’s green spaces and champions the people behind them and Alcester Town Council’s policy of acquiring land from the district council and then protecting it helped Alcester clinch this year’s award.
Receiving the award Mike Gittus of Alcester Town Council, told the audience at Lord’s Cricket Ground: “Alcester Town Council has the custody of a small town with a big heart. Councillor Eric Payne and I have worked tirelessly over the last eight years to preserve, protect and enhance areas of green open space for the future benefit of the local community. We are over the moon to receive this award on behalf of the town we love to serve.”
Land at Abbey Fields, Alcester was recently transformed into an area of greenery having been given a complete makeover by volunteers in the local community.
With the emphasis on outdoor living and exercise, Abbey Fields is part of an ongoing commitment by Alcester Town Council to regenerate areas for public use.
The next phase - which works alongside the recent daffodil planting - is the continued growing of wild flowers in the area to help create an informal atmosphere for locals to enjoy.
