Simon Carr, who organises club and rally events at the museum, said: “It was a very good event, we had a record number of cars and a record number of visitors which we were very happy about.

“I was a bit surprised because I can appreciate that it is a bit of a specialist event, but we had loads of families here out for the day, I certainly think the weather helped, it was cold but dry.

“To be able to offer a free, exciting event to visitors like this is something we’re very pleased about.”

HRCR Chairman Paul Loveridge added: “More and more people are using their classic Minis for historic rallying and 2016 will inevitably see these brilliant little cars making the headlines again, just as they did 50 years ago.”

The museum itself is currently closed for refurbishment and will re-open to the public on 13 February.
