Carer Dawn is a fisherman's friend
A Stratford double amputee who believed he could no longer enjoy his passion for fishing has been helped back on to the riverbank by a local carer.
Ron Burke, 73, lost his one remaining leg as a result of diabetes three years ago, and felt unable to get out and enjoy activities and pastimes that others take for granted.
Seeing how this was affecting Ron, carer Dawn Wootton, who works for Stratford based Home Instead Senior Care, decided to see if she could help.
Ron’s mood suffered prior to being cared for by Home Instead as he chose to spend his time doing jigsaw puzzles.
Dawn said: “I asked Ron what activity he would most like to do; he replied, fishing.
“He told me that because he is wheelchair bound he would be unable to go fishing again and he’s given his equipment away.
“I like a challenge so set about researching fishing for disabled people and fishing equipment. I was determined to get him back out by the water again.
“I was delighted to find a disabled fishing club online as well as information on fishing holidays for disabled people which I passed on to Ron.
“With the help of my internet-savvy daughter I sourced fishing equipment for free. I was so excited to go and collect a fishing rod and other equipment which I delivered to Ron the following day.”
Ron is now a regular fixture on the river and is thankful for the efforts Dawn went to on his behalf.
Ron said: “Dawn really is a fisherman’s friend and her efforts have made a real difference to my life.
“Soon after Dawn got me kitted out I obtained my fishing licence and am now out fishing on the Avon on a regular basis.
“We did have a laugh though. I had a few practice journeys to test getting to the river bank in my wheelchair. I did become stuck in the mud once and had to be rescued by a friend, but it was worth it as I’m enjoying my fishing so much.
“I have now even purchased more equipment and I know that Dawn is also on the lookout for other bits for me – all free of course! I have even purchased a table top fridge in which to store my maggots, Dawn is not so keen on looking in that.”
