A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said the man was treated at the roadside for injuries to his head, chest, abdomen, pelvis and neck.

"The doctor took the decision to anaesthetise him in attempt to stabilise his condition.

“He was then transported to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire but unfortunately his injuries are thought to be extremely serious.

“His passenger, a woman in her 20s, was fully conscious when crews arrived, undoubtedly helped by the fact she was wearing a helmet. It appears the helmet had taken a huge impact in the crash as it had a very large crack, saving her from a serious head injury.

“She was treated for injuries to her right arm and right shoulder, immobilised and given pain relief before being taken to the same hospital."

The driver of the car involved was a woman, also said to be in her 20s. She was treated for minor bruising and the effects of shock before being discharged on scene.

The car itself sufferd damage to its side.
