Award judges tune in to radio comedy
A FORMER student at Stratford-upon-Avon Girls’ Grammar School has won the much coveted Kevin Greening Award at this year’s Student Radio Awards.
Faye Lawrence’s comedy mockumentary series called Yeezy Taught Me series caught the ears of the judges.
It is about Kanye West and the impact he has had on her life.
Delivered in a persona based on an over-dramatised version of herself, Faye tells stories about her life which relate loosely to Kanye’s music with an over-exaggerated importance, as though the music was written about her and for her.
The Kevin Greening Award is supported by Radio One and Global Radio, and is given in recognition of unique on-air creativity.
Faye is in her final year studying English Literature and Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds.
While at the grammar school she performed in many drama productions and musicals as well as producing a number of videos for the school.
She joined Leeds Student Radio (LSR) in her first year as a presenter on a weekly arts show and now produces the show.
In her second year she won the LSR Best Entertainment Show for her Yeezy Taught Me series, which led to her nomination for the national Student Radio Awards.
“I love writing and producing my radio shows,” said Faye.
“There was something disingenuous about a Shottery girl presenting a show about rap music and I am delighted to have won the award — the best bit about the ceremony was the hug from Greg James.” F
aye’s parents, Jill and Michael, said: “We always thought her shows were hilarious but we are not very objective judges, we are very proud of her.”
Stratford Girls’ Grammar School head teacher, Jacqui Cornell, said: “We are equally proud of Faye.
“This award demonstrates the diverse talents and careers that our girls aspire to. “We are looking forward to welcoming her back to school to speak to our girls as part of our inspirational Futures Week at the beginning of December.”
