Aspiring tennis star appeals for help

A Stratford School student with dreams of a career in professional tennis is appealing for help to fund a vital operation on her foot.

Charlotte Peckover, 18 from Shipston, is currently ranked 125 in the British female tennis rankings, but had been number six before a string of injuries took their toll.

Charlotte is determined to get back to those high levels, but needs to raise £4,000 to fund a specialist operation to remove torn cartilage and inflamed joint tissue from her left foot.

Her doctors are confident the operation will end Charlotte’s injury issues and enable her to be fighting fit on the court again.

Charlotte, who also runs children’s tennis coaching and works as a waitress, has not been able to save the money she needs for the procedure and is asking for help.

Charlotte said: “I was sixth in the UK in around 2013, it was great to meet all these amazing people like Andy and Judy Murray, people who are great role models, who you really look up to when you’re learning to play.

“Judy was really lovely, she told me that if I had a dream to do something I should keep on trying to make it happen, that anything was possible.

“I had to have an operation on my knee and I was just back playing at a high level again, when I developed this problem with my foot about 18 months ago. I couldn’t play in tournaments and my ranking dropped, I’m now at 125.

“It’s got so bad that it’s very painful to play and even hurts when I’m walking, it’s something that needs to be sorted.

“It was devastating when the doctor told me that I needed to have an operation on my foot, because I know that from having an operation on my knee, that it takes so long to get back to that high level again. However doctors are 95 per cent sure that this will sort out the problem and I’m hoping to have the operation at the end of February.

“It will hopefully take me around 4-12 weeks to recover.

“My ambition is to get back to that high level and start playing in international tournaments. One of my highlights so far was interviewing Ashleigh Barty in 2017 for a piece that was broadcast on Eurosport.

“My parents are very proud of everything I’ve achieved so far and they’re keen to keep supporting me, but their money can only go so far, they can’t afford this.”
