Anne takes chains for historic presidency
THERE are many changes happening in the world at the moment, and Shakespeare Lions are no exception.
This year it will be 100 years since Lions International started and 50 years since Stratford set up its own club, known as Shakespeare Lions.
And in keeping with the mood of the country for something new, the group has appointed its first female president, with outgoing president, Trevor Lloyd-Adams, handing over the chains of office to Anne Turner.
Anne is married with two daughters. She turns 60 next month and recently retired as finance director and chief operating officer at Orbit Housing. She is from Whitley Bay and moved to Stratford in 1981.
She has been a member of Shakespeare Lions for eight years and is one of six female members.
Anne said: “I don’t really see it as a big thing that I am the first female president. I worked in senior roles with men for many years and have always felt that I was chosen to do a job because I was right for it.”
In taking over the baton Anne said her focus would be on service in the community.
“Shakespeare Lions raised over £13,000 over the last 12 months, the majority of which was distributed to support local causes and needs.
“But in addition many Lions give of their time to provide services where we can to various individuals and groups.
“This year we will be trying to increase that service delivery so I am keen to hear from anyone who has ideas we can consider.”
