THOUSANDS of thrill seekers descended on Alcester on Monday and Tuesday (2nd and 3rd October) in search of excitement as the annual Mop came to town.

High bailiff Marc Venables declared the fair open after the reading of the royal proclamation and then the thrills began.

While youngsters enjoyed rides on the traditional merry-go-rounds and helter-skelter, braver souls opted for the adrenaline rush of the Twister and the Crazy Frog – both designed to spin the rider at high-speed.

There was also plenty to tempt the palate with sizzling burgers and an array of sweet treats.

Billy Kimberley, who runs Kimberley’s Sweets, makes his own toffee apples and candy floss. He’s been working the Mop since age seven and his family has been making sweets for generations.

The 77-year-old from Evesham said: “It really is the fun of the fair. You see all the people coming out enjoying themselves and you hope to add to that enjoyment by providing amusements or sweets.”

For Marc it was his last official duty before he hands over his chain to the next high bailiff at Thursday night’s court leet elections.

He told the Herald: “It’s been a roller-coaster of a year with mostly good and a few bad points, but I’ve really enjoyed being part of the history of what the court leet is all about. To be part of its fabric has been quite an honour.”
