In November last year, the planning committee overwhelmingly voted against an application for 12 semi-detached lodges.

Objections had been raised by Warwick Society as well as Leamington Society, The Gardens Trust and its Warwickshire branch, and in 35 letters from individuals.

Geoff Spooner, general manager at Warwick Castle, who publicly criticised that decision, said this week: "We are delighted.

"The committee has recognised the considerable effort that the Castle has undertaken to address concerns related to the previous scheme, whilst acknowledging the beneficial economic impact that the estimated 20,000 additional visitors to the town will generate, over and above the castle’s significant existing contribution to tourism in the area."

He concluded: "We thank the many individuals, businesses and organisations that have supported us throughout our application process."

In a statement, Warwick Society said: "The disappointing result speaks volumes about Warwick District Council’s commitment to heritage and ability rigorously to scrutinise evidence submitted.

"We await the decision of the government office on whether there will be a call-in for public inquiry."

In February, the castle got permission to continue to have glamping tents on Foxes Study during the summer months until 2017.

Forty one tents will be in place with strict conditions that they remain in place from 1st May until 30th September with any lighting is kept to the absolute minimum overnight.
