Bringing fish & chips to your door

A new mobile fish & chip service has been launched to bring Britain’s national dish to communities without a chippy in Warwickshire.

Howe & Co Fish & Chips will begin the unique service to places such as Hampton Magna, Hatton Park, Claverdon and Barford as well as at caravan sites close to Stratford from 24 October.

The company, which has been operating in the South East for 85 years, will deliver street by street and door to door at lunch times and in the early evening in its brand new fish & chip van, with all meals freshly prepared on the customer’s doorstep.

Howe & Co will also visit a number of residential homes for the elderly, providing ‘chippy nights’ with an OAP discount and also including those that are housebound or disabled on its regular rounds.

The food offered is exactly what you would expect from a standard fish & chip shop, cooked in exactly the same way, though the menu is slightly smaller because of the limited space available.

Richard Ackland, director of the company’s franchise covering Warwickshire, said: “Traditional English fish & chips are as popular as ever and we are here to serve those communities that are not currently well catered for by fish & chip shops. Even though we have not yet been out in the new van, we’re looking into a second van because we know there is demand for this. The main centres of Warwickshire, places such as Kenilworth, are well served by takeaways but a lot of the more rural centres, particularly newer developments don’t tend to be.

“The van itself is very well designed and the fryer runs off LPG. The company who we franchise this from have been doing this for many years and I believe it started off serving from army vehicles after the First World War. I don’t think it’s ever really been done in Warwickshire before but I think there used to be more fish & chip vans in the 70s.”

The company also hopes its service will prove popular at private functions in the area.
