A fantastic effort to help Stratford’s homeless

A Stratford mum and her two young daughters have been on a mission to help the town’s homeless this Christmas, collecting vital supplies for the Link Project.

Sian Meenan and daughters Isla, 6, and Erin, 4, have been busy collecting toiletries, clothes, rucksacks, bottled water and other essentials for both men and women.

After collecting an impressive ten bags worth, Sian and the girls presented them to the Stratford Link Project, the organisation which supports the town’s homeless community, a few days before Christmas.

Sian said: “It was my eldest daughter Isla’s idea. She’s reached that age now where she sees rough sleepers around and asks the question about why do people have to live this way?

“Initially it was just going to be a couple of parcels but after putting out an appeal on Facebook we had a fantastic response and managed to get about 12 bags together. Each bag had at least one set of warm clothing inside.”

Sian added: “The girls got very involved with helping me pack things up as well, but I think it’s important for them to get involved so they can learn about how not everyone is as lucky as we are.”

Anne Johnson, who co-ordinates the Stratford Link Project on behalf of Stratford District Council, added: “We never say no to these donations because we always make use of them. People have been very generous this winter and we’ve got quite a lot of donations, but in the summer time we don’t get very much, so we can hold on to some of this until later in the year.

“I think it’s amazing what Sian and her daughters have done, they are only four and six and they’ve been in and chatted to a couple of the homeless people here about how they will spend Christmas.

“It’s a lot better for people to give these donations to the Link because I can make sure they go where they are really needed. Everyone on Stratford’s streets has been offered accommodation over Christmas and Boxing Day, there may still be one or two who choose not to take up that offer during some of the festive period.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated.”
