Callous vandals have wrought havoc at St Laurence Church in Bidford, damaging and pushing over gravestones.

Around eight or nine gravestones were affected sometime between 19th and 21st December.

A number of the stones damaged are very old and the families of the deceased may no longer be living in the area.

Chris Horn, churchwarden at St Laurence Church, said: “Some of these stones are around 100 years old and it’s likely the families who own them are no longer living in the area. We do occasionally have to take stones down if they are looking unsafe, but these ones that were toppled looked stable. They will probably have to just remain on the ground now.”

If you have any information about the incident call Warwickshire Police on 101 quoting the crime reference number 0132 of 22nd December.

Elsewhere in Bidford police advice aimed at deterring the theft of Christmas wreathes from Bidford Cemetery seems to have worked.

Over the previous two Christmases around 130 wreathes have been stolen, with criminals suspected of selling them on during the festive period.

In an attempt to beat the thieves police issued advice such as marking the wreathes with your postcode using ultraviolet pens and tying wreathes to heavy or unwieldly objects.

Police confirmed this week that they are not aware of any reports of wreathes going missing this year.
