A RECRUITMENT campaign undertaken by Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, has led to 29 new firefighters starting their training today (Monday 4th September).
This is the first major recruitment campaign that has taken place in the county for more than nine years.
The campaign to recruit to whole time began in April this year, with over 700 applications being received.
The recruits then went through a rigorous selection process and 29 whole time recruits have been accepted into the service.
The recruits attended their first induction session, on Friday. Chief Fire Officer for Warwickshire, Andy Hickmott said: “It’s been a really important morning for the service.
“This is the first time in over nine years that we have recruited to whole time positions, but the first time that we have recruited 29 whole time firefighters at once.
“I wish the new recruits all the very best with their training. They are starting a very long, but exciting journey into what I feel is a very privileged career.”
Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Fire and Community Safety, Howard Roberts added: “I am delighted that we have recruited so many new recruits. It is a very exciting time for the service and I look forward to welcoming them into the organisation following their training courses. Good luck to all involved.”
On Friday, the recruits have received a full induction into the service with the Chief Fire Officer and the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Rob Moyney, along with an introduction into how the service works from Group Commander, Jon Dixon. The recruits were then given an overview of each fire station, including shift patterns and station profiles from the Station Commanders.
From today (Monday), the recruits will undertake a rigorous 12 week training course, which covers everything from breathing apparatus training, road traffic collision training, hazardous materials and live firefighter training, before they go onto stations to become part of the community they serve.
