CARL Adams urged Stratford Town to produce a Christmas cracker of a performance by describing the visit of Kings Langley tonight (Tuesday) as a “must win”.
Town had to settle for a point on Saturday in a goalless draw at home to third-from-bottom Hayes & Yeading United. Both keepers were busy at either end but neither side could produce the finishing touch.
But the point lifted Stratford six points clear of the Southern Premier drop zone and they want to extend the advantage when 19th-placed Kings Langley make their first visit to the DCS Stadium.
“Before Saturay’s game, I would have felt a draw was two points dropped but in fairness to Hayes, who played well, it was a point gained,” said manager Adams.
“They made it tough for us but it means the game against Kings Langley is a must-win.
“If we can move nine points clear of the bottom four, then it gives us a bit of breathing space.”
Adams will have a full squad available to face Kings Langley, who were promoted as Central Division champions last season, and who lie four points behind Town.
Trey Brathwaite and Warren Brookes have linked up with Rugby Town, now managed by former Town favourite Gary Moran, to give the pair match fitness after two-month injury lay-offs.
Despite a run of one league win since October, Adams believes his side have played better than results suggest.
“I think we’ve been playing really well in the last six weeks but we have not finished teams off,” said the boss.
“We’ve been ahead in all those games but we haven’t had that bit of guile to get us over the winning line.”
Meanwhile, Stratford have been handed a trip to Leamington in the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
Town already head to the table-topping Brakes on Boxing Day for a keenly-anticipated league encounter.
The county cup tie has been arranged for January 31.
In the other quarter-finals, Sutton Coldfield Town entertain Birmingham City; Hednesford Town or Burton Albion will be at home to Wolves and holders Solihull Moors meet Walsall. All the games will be played in the new year.
