STRATFORD’S two new state-of-the-art indoor tennis courts were officially opened by TV presenter Andrew Castle on Sunday.

The former British number one was the star attraction at Swans Nest Lane as Stratford-on-Avon Tennis Club unveiled its new ‘bubble’ courts, known as the domes.

The official opening formed part of a busy day at the club, with the Davis Cup Trophy Tour also taking place.

img_2723Chairman of Stratford Tennis Club, John Dixon, hailed the day as a huge success and said the interest had seen the club register more than 20 new members.

“What a day this has been for our club,” said Dixon.

“We’ve had more than 300 visitors to the Davis Cup Trophy Tour and more than 100 have tried the free tennis activities.

“The atmosphere has been incredible and to have Andrew Castle officially open our facilities was the icing on the cake.

“It was wonderful to show off our club and our upgraded facilities, alongside the iconic Davis Cup, not only to die-hard tennis fans, but also to newcomers.

“We’re delighted to say we signed up more than 20 new members. We now look forward to making those new members feel especially welcome.”

Castle said: “Stratford Tennis Club is friendly, welcoming and offers players of all ages fantastic facilities.

“Everywhere I have looked today I saw happy, smiling faces and that’s what sport is all about.”

The domes project was the brainchild of Stratford TC’s manager, Graeme Adams.

Adams got the indoor project rolling by successfully obtaining planning permission for two single-skin dome structures for two of the seven courts.

Adams said: “It was so exciting to see so many people at the club. Great Britain’s success in the Davis Cup and Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win and gold medal in Rio has given tennis a huge boost.

“Stratford not only has the best facilities in south Warwickshire, but we also have a highly enthusiastic and experienced coaching team.

“We are very proud of that and we are keen to show the people of Stratford what a great game tennis is and what a great club they have on their doorstep.”
