PROMOTION IS THE PRIORITY, SAYS BROWN
AN audience of more than 30 supporters and volunteers attended last week’s fans’ forum with Town manager Rod Brown, writes Steve Wood.
Brown opened the session by talking about the lessons he’d learnt from the previous season: “It was much tougher than I thought,” he said. “I signed more than 50 players in a team that evolved as the season went on but we did finish relatively strongly.”
The manager went on to explain that his major issue all season was the lack of genuine goalscorer. He did admit that he had inherited a goalscorer in Jozsef Jakab but that Jozsef struggled to get fit in the close season and also the style of play didn’t suit him.
“I needed a 30 goal-a-season centre forward—and still do! But you have to pay good money for that type of player which was evident with Barwell last season, as plenty of clubs from higher leagues couldn’t lure their two forwards away. “The system that I play, you either love or hate, but it is an oppressive system and I don’t plan to change it for next season,” he stated.
Brown admitted that for the system to work he needed to improve the wide positions and it was essential to have players that could work box to box, like Tim Jackson. He feels he signed such a player in Andy Wells who has played for Aston Villa as well as Hereford United and was part of the promotion-winning team at Stourbridge.
“I’m confident that we’ll get promotion if we can stay injury and suspension free and pre-season is all about getting fit and improving the shape, but everything is about that opening game on Saturday 7th August,” said Brown.
