David Tennant has taken the best actor prize at the inaugural BBC Audio Drama Awards.

The former Doctor Who star, who also hosted the ceremony, took the award for his role in Kafka in Kafka: The Musical. Rosie Cavaliero was named best actress as Ruthie, in Lost Property: A Telegraph from the Queen.

Other awards on the night went to Michelle Lipton, who won best radio drama script from a newcomer for Amazing Grace, and Andrew Scott, who took the best supporting actor/actress gong for his role in Nicky Perry's play Referee.

The aim of the awards was "to celebrate and recognise the cultural importance of audio drama, on air and online".

Tim Davie, director, BBC Audio & Music, said he hoped the awards would bring "wider recognition of the many talented people who work in the genre".

David Tennant's previous parts, beside the famous Doctor, have included Barty Crouch Jr in the Harry Potter series, and a widely-praised Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
