DRAGONS took to the River Avon in Stratford-upon-Avon once again and raised over £6,000 for Shakespeare Hospice during last Saturday’s Shakespeare Hospice Dragon Boat Race.
Calm conditions favoured the eight teams from local companies who competed on the day in a fun-filled festival of water races which started down river and ended at a finish line in front of Stratford Boat Club.
Ali Gray, from the hospice, who was event organiser, said the event had been a great success: “It was a brilliant day. The atmosphere was fantastic and the teams really gave their all in the races.”
Supporters of the dragon boat crews cheered from the banks of the river as they tucked into paella and pies and Stratford Boat Club was on hand to help river traffic negotiate the Avon during the race day.
The Wildmoor Vikings, a team from Wildmoor Spa & Health Club, stormed to victory and were named dragon boat champions, with the team from Seco Tools coming in close second.
Ali also thanked those who supported the event, including Guy Salmon, DCS and Stratford Leisure Centre.
