THE waiting is over as the route of the Olympic Torch through Stratford-upon-Avon and the district on Sunday 1st July has now been revealed.
The 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will be passing through the communities of Earlswood, Alcester, Newbold-on-Stour, Alderminster and Stratford before continuing its journey to Warwick.
The full route of the torch was revealed today (Monday), and gives local communities plenty of time to prepare and participate in this unique event, by embracing the Olympic spirit and cheering on the nominated torchbearers as they travel through their town.
The torchbearers to carry the Flame have gone through a public nomination processes and the organising committee for the torch route has endeavoured to slot all community torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on.
Each torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform which has been designed by adidas.
“It’s fantastic that the Olympic Torch is coming to Stratford district. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay. This announcement really brings the route to life and I hope local communities are excited by the opportunity to get in involved in the build up to London 2012 and show Stratford district is embracing the Olympic spirit,” said cllr Chris Saint, leader of Stratford District Council.
An average of 115 torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on 27th July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The routes confirmed for Sunday 1st July, are:
Earlswood at 9.12am – Tanworth Lane, Slater Street, Shutt Lane, Earlswood Common, Broad Lane, Alcester Road
Alcester at 10.49am - Alcester Health (B4090), Birmingham Road, School Road, Henley Street, High Street, Swan Lane, Evesham Street, A435, A46
Newbold-on-Stour at 2.21pm – Stratford Road (A3400)
Alderminster at 2.29pm – Shipston Road (A3400)
Stratford at 2.51pm – Shipston Road (A3400), Banbury Road, Clopton Bridge, Bridge Street, Henley Street, Windsor Street, Birmingham Road, continues on A46 to Warwick.
