Yesterday (Monday) doctors told her the cancer has not spread beyond her lymph nodes, but she was also told because of its aggressive nature, both her breasts and her ovaries will need to be removed.
She told the Stratford Herald: “It was the crappest Christmas ever, a huge shock. Since my journey began I have found there is little or no information regarding this rare form, which accounts for between one and four per cent of breast cancers.”
Inflammatory breast cancer usually affects younger women, and because of its nature—there are no lumps —it can be easily missed.
After being left disappointed with the amount of information available, Emma has decided to help raise awareness.
“This is a silent killer as it doesn’t present with a lump unlike other breast cancers, and I want to change that,” she said.
Emma, who has three sons, aged 12, eight and five, is now blogging about her journey on Facebook, where over 500 people are following her emotional and personal posts about fighting the disease.
She has shared pictures of her symptoms to help educate people about the disease and, after starting chemotherapy on 12th January, has posted pictures of her hair loss.
Her battle is one that she hopes will inspire others to be vigilant of the little-known disease.
“But I need help,” she said. “If anyone who knows someone who can raise awareness of IBC please don’t hesitate to contact me.”
Emma’s blog can be found on Facebook and is called ‘My Inflammatory Breast Cancer Journey’. Her e-mail address is emmadauris@ yahoo.co.uk
