HOUSEHOLDERS in the Stratford-on-Avon district should be paying no more in council tax in 2013-14 than they have paid in the past year - unless their parish or town councils impose increases.
This week Warwickshire County Council - which takes the lion’s share of council tax - fulfilled its pledge to again go for a tax freeze in line with government policy.
Stratford District Council is also planning a freeze and so is Warwickshire Police, which in recent years has tended to buck the trend and impose higher tax rises—in percentage terms—than the other precepting authorities. Police commissioner Ron Ball promised a tax freeze in his election campaign, as did the other two candidates.
Following Tuesday’s budget-setting meeting of the county council a typical Band D taxpayer will be paying £1,155.25. The district and town and parish council elements of the tax, along with that of the police, will come on top.
Cllr Alan Farnell (Cons, Nuneaton), the county council leader, said: “Once again we do not propose to increase the county council tax which remains at the level set back in 2010-11.
“We recognise that families’ budgets are being squeezed in these constrained times and we remain committed to playing our part in helping them whilst providing residents with value for money.”
