SDC are set to consider the application in May.

Stratford-on-Avon District Council will not be supporting a major project which could have led to the extension of the Avon Navigation from Stratford to Warwick.

The decision at today’s meeting of Cabinet, follows high level assessment carried out on behalf of the Council and its partners Warwick District Council and the Avon Navigation trust to establish the potential environmental and socio- economic impacts if such a scheme were put in place.

The final report which was presented to Councillors indicated that the economic case of an extension in terms of tourism potential, expected capital costs and environmental costs would not make it a viable option for further investment.

Cllr Mark Cargill, deputy leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council said: “Unfortunately the business case for this proposal is weak with the environmental and capital costs outweighing the benefits. I would like to draw a line under this element of the proposal – it would be unfair that residents, landowners and businesses should have a cloud hanging over them in the potential for the scheme to be resurrected in the future.

“However the report to open up a footpath between Stratford and Warwick is another matter and this will be sent to Warwickshire County Council for consideration as the authority responsible for footpaths.”

Members agreed that no further work would take place to progress the scheme other than to make a representation to Warwickshire County Council to promote cycle way and footpath improvements along the Avon corridor between Warwick and Stratford.

Does anyone know what happened to the charity ‘Stratford and Warwick Waterways Trust Ltd.’? It was set up to raise funds for opening up the waterway between Stratford and Warwick. I used to give to this charity so I would be most interested to know what happened to the money that was raised. Perhaps a bit of investigative journalism would clear this matter up? From what I can see, one day the charity existed and the next day it, along with the money, was gone.

The company was dissolved 2017 from what information is in Companies House, with over £20K on the books. All information is available including directors names on the following link, would be interesting to know how they reply to your question.

Thanks for your response. It would be interesting to hear from anyone connected with the Stratford and Warwick Waterways Trust.
Did you set up this disqus account just for this? If so, that is also interesting. Good stuff.
Any other locals out there with an interest in this matter, e.g. other people that have donated to the charity, or The Stratford Herald, should also follow it up. The Charities Commission might have some information.
