Cllr Chris Saint has stepped down as leader of Stratford District Council after failing to retain the leadership of the ruling conservative group at its annual meeting earlier this week.
During a close vote on Tuesday, conservative members instead chose Cllr Tony Jefferson to lead the group, though Cllr Saint still remained leader of the council.
This morning Cllr Saint formally resigned as council leader, with Cllr Jefferson set to formally take up the role during next Wednesday’s annual council meeting.
Cllr Saint said: “It has been a privilege to have been given the opportunity to serve as Leader of Stratford-on-Avon District Council. Despite the changing and challenging local government landscape in recent years I have enjoyed playing my part and found it hugely rewarding.
“None of what I have achieved as Leader has been achieved alone. I have been incredibly lucky to have a team of talented councillor colleagues and a set of dedicated council officers alongside me.”
Cllr Saint remains District Council ward member for Shipston North.
