Lightning strike damages community shop


A dramatic lightning strike caused significant damage to the bell tower at Ilmington’s Community Shop yesterday (Saturday).

Nobody was hurt but the strike has left the bell tower in a precarious state, while the shop has also temporarily lost its internet connection and the use of a till.

The former bell tower at St Philip’s Roman Catholic Church in Ilmngton, which is now the community shop and cafe.

Despite the damage, the shop was able to open again this morning, but cannot be accessed via the entrance on Grump Street.

The shop is in the former St Philip’s Roman Catholic Church on Upper Green and is owned and run by a co-operative of local people.

Only cash payments can be accepted until the shop’s internet connection is restored.
