After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, they were bowled out for just 77 after 26.2 overs with Stratford opening bowler Tom Grundy returning the outstanding figures of 10-1-17-4.

Captain Chris Whelan took 2-13, Mike Brown 2-20, James Urquhart 1-15 and Aidy Witts 1-7 to complete the carnage. Only Penn skipper Tom Nutting (26), batting at No.9, passed the 20-mark.

In reply, Stratford reached 78-4 in the 18th over to clinch victory. Opener Rob West saw them over the line with an unbeaten 38 with South African left-hander Abel Mokhuane making 18.

Whelan was pleased with his side’s start to the season, which has seen two wins from their first three games. He said: “It’s gone well so far. We’ve got 13 or 14 players who are competing for a place in the team and the core of the squad is very good.”
